Mouth guards are coverings worn over the teeth to protect them from problems like injury from teeth grinding. Since teeth grinding usually happens while you are sleeping, most people do not know that they do it. If you notice any of the following symptoms, ask our dentist about getting a mouth guard:
- Dull headaches
- A sore jaw
- Teeth that are loose or tender
- Fractured teeth
There are three types of bite guards. Stock mouth protectors come ready to wear. They are inexpensive and can be bought at sporting goods stores. Stock mouth protectors, however, cannot be adjusted to fit your mouth; they are bulky, may make talking and breathing difficult, and do not provide as much protection as other types of mouth guards.
Boil-and-bite mouth protectors can also be found at sporting goods stores and offer more protection than stock mouth protectors. Boil-and-bite mouth protectors are placed in hot water to soften and then are placed in the mouth to be shaped around the teeth. Because of this, they offer a better fit than stock mouth protectors.
Custom-fitted mouth protectors work the best, providing the most comfort and protection. Dr. Michael Wilhite designs and makes the mouth guard for you in our office. Our dentist and team make an impression of your teeth, and the mouth guard is molded over the model.
